On Saturday (Jan. 12), the Virginia superstar became the first female rap artist inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame, reports CBS News.
Elliott is only the third rapper to be given the honor. Last June, Jermaine Dupri was inducted into the Hall. Jay-Z was the first rapper in the SHOF's 50-year history to earn the honor in 2017.
Founded in 1969, the SHOF helps celebrate music’s biggest pioneers, while also grooming the next generation of singers and songwriters. A songwriter with an outstanding catalog of songs is considered for induction 20 years after the first commercial release of a song.
Elliott is a five-time Grammy Award winner, who is also known for writing and producing songs for celebrities such as Janet Jackson, Lil Kim, Beyonce, Monica, Mary J. Blinge, Whitney Houston, Aaliyah, SWV, and so many more.
Her six studio albums have each been RIAA platinum certified or better, making her the only woman rapper with this accomplishment.
