5 Awesome Apps for Surviving this Semester

With fall semester right around the corner, being prepared to take on school (and life at the same time) is the key to getting past that “C’s get degrees” slump. Luckily, your phone can provide you a wealth of resources to make juggling classes, a social life, jobs and internships a whole lot easier. In fact, these 5 FREE apps are exactly what you might need to make this semester your best one yet.

Microsoft OneNote

Why have a notebook when you can have a digital one? The cool thing about Microsoft OneNote is that you’re essentially working with software that acts like paper. Tap on any part of the page, and you are able to write, type, draw, annotate- and anything you create is both easy to share and organize. Best of all, you can insert all types of media into your notes, so keeping tons of files together is a lot easier to do when it’s all on the same page. This app comes free with a Microsoft Office account (which most schools offer either discounted or for free), but you can also download it and use it for free when creating a Microsoft account.

Chegg:

Stop paying full price for textbooks. Seriously. This is an industry that is worth between $7 and $10 billion- nearly 812% more expensive in the past 35 years. They do not need your money- so save it with Chegg. Chegg allows you to search for textbooks at either used prices or for rentals, and also offers tutoring services, such as several weeks- worth of homework guides. You can also sell your own books through it. A great bonus to using Chegg is the number of discounts and coupons you get from signing up with an account and actually ordering through them. One box with just one book alone can get you free Redbull cans, 40% off Hello Fresh subscription boxes and BOGO coupons for backpack retailers. Even better: return labels for free shipping when you rent books. Say it with me: we love free things.

OFFTIME:

Got a lot to get done tonight, but can’t stay off the phone? OFFTIME is like the Do Not Disturb option on steroids. The app helps block websites, apps, notification and even texts during the selected block of time, so you’re completely free to study, get homework done and plan out your schedule without checking Instagram every five minutes. OFFTIME also keeps track of your phone usage…which yes, is kind of creepy. But it gives you an overview of where you might be wasting a little too much time on when it comes to trying to study..

ALARMY:

Never, ever be late to an 8AM ever again: Alarmy is the ultimate alarm. Instead of providing a snooze button, the app forces you to take a picture of your room in order to end the alarm. Gone are the days of the snooze button keeping you from being on time for that amazing 8 AM you just had to sign up for! (The picture above is a joke, but hey, if it makes you stay awake…)

15 Minute Recipes/ Jamie’s Recipes

This semester, let’s do better by actually eating decent meals instead of starving between classes. 15 Minute Recipes is a virtual cookbook that not only lists meals that take about 15 minutes to prepare/cook, but also lists all the ingredients you’ll need. The best part is you can filter recipes according to what you might already have in the fridge, so the app is great for keeping track of what you do have and what you might want to stock up on. It’s also free and smartwatch friendly, so you’re never left alone in the kitchen.

Unfortunately, 15 Minute Recipes is only available for Android phones, but Jamie’s Recipes, created by chef Jamie Oliver, is a close second to the goal of making quick but healthy and tasty meals.
